Speed Week features the best criterium cyclists in
the world, racing the downtown streets of seven southern
cities. These
downtown areas are transformed into international cycling
competition arenas from April 26 – May 4, 2008.
Olympians, world, and nationally-ranked men and women
athletes will take to the streets to contest the series, as
well as qualifying positions for the USA CRITS Finals.
America
has a rich history of criterium racing, a unique form of
cycling that stresses high-speed racing, contested amidst a
thriving urban atmosphere. Criterium racing’s ability to
combine the most exciting elements of popular sports with
the large-scale appeal of downtown arts and music festivals
has made it the most enduring form of cycling in North
America with an ever-growing following of fans. Because
these races are historically run on short laps through city
streets, this has made the criterium format the most
spectator-friendly form of cycling.
